Hair & Fibers Test - Due December 5/6

Its time to try something new once again. I've put this units test online and would like to ask that those of you with Internet access to take this in a paperless manner (except for the answer sheet which I will give you in class). If you do not have Internet access, please let me know so we can work out alternative arrangements (like seminar time Monday Nov. 25, Tuesday Dec. 3, and/or Friday Dec. 6).

The test is due on either December 5 or 6, whichever day I see you first (unless other arrangements were made ahead of time).

The test is a take home test which means any and all resources (except me) may be used to help you be successful on the test. Text or email me if you have any questions or concerns with this. Good luck.

Missing Days/Work Over Past Two Weeks

If you have missed any days over the past two weeks (like I have), then you can access all of your assignments from the blog. We worked on three things over the past two weeks and they are linked within the four top posts on this blog. Here's what we've done:

1. The Case of Bunsen Burned (click here to access all of the case work and instructions for the assignment.) We worked on this Friday October 25 - Tuesday October 29

2. Online CSI Experience (see several blog posts below for instructions and links). We worked on this Wednesday October 30 - Friday November 1

3. Intro hair analysis and article review (see blog post below for video and links and instruction). We worked on this Monday November 4 or Tuesday November 5 (whichever day you had class first of the two days)

4. Glass quiz test makeups: several of you have not taken the glass quiz. This needs to be done asap.

All past due assignments from when I was out are due by no later than the end of the day on Tuesday November 12. That gives you two seminar days, six days before or after school, and six lunch periods to see me with any questions. Therefore, no excuses for not getting this finished

FYI - the Canine Caper case report is not due anytime soon.

I'm glad to be back :)

Lesson Plans for Monday & Tuesday

Sorry everyone, but I'm still hurting too much to return on Monday. I'll be ready to go on Wednesday. In the meantime, business as usual this week. For your first lesson of the week, I will be teaching about hair analysis (see the video below). You should be taking notes on the info presented and recording any questions that you have in your notes so we can discuss them later in the week.

Once you are done with the lesson, you will be reading an article that centers on hair analysis and how it can be used as a timeline in the recording of an individuals life (click here for the original article). You will then write a one paragraph summary of the article, individually, and your summary should include a list of things you learned by reading the article. Once this is finished, you will work with a partner to develop a set of study guide questions that can be used to go with the article. The study guide should consist of a variety of question types (multiple choice, true/false, short answer, etc.) and have at least 10 questions. Additionally, you should include one essay question in your study guide.

Finally, you should include a study guide answer key for your worksheet that is complete with point values, correct answers, and at least two sample correct responses to your essay question.

Lesson Plans for Remainder of Week

I hope you all have a great rest of the week and I look forward to being back next week. Here's a briefing on what you will be working on the next several class periods. Please take the time to complete the following survey at the end of each class period so I can keep track of your thoughts - CSI ONLINE DAILY FEEDBACK FORM (the survey will take 3-5 minutes per day and should be completed individually, not as a pair:

VIDEO EXPLAINING THE LESSON:

Go to the site listed at the bottom of this entry. Please read all of these directions before preceding.

Today you will be working in PAIRS (not threes or fours) with a website that has you work with various characters from the TV show CSI. I suggest that you setup a username in the upper right hand corner of the site so you can save your work as you'll be using this site again tomorrow. If you don't setup a username, you will not be able to save your work and continue from the same spot at a later time. You will be completing various cases throughout the semester on this site.

Anyways, you will begin by completing the Case One: Basic Training Course. Follow the prompts on the screen to help guide you through the activity. Let me warn you that if you make to many errant clicks, it will make you start over. So, read through everything thoroughly and take notes on anything that may help you solve the case. As you complete each activity, please call over your teacher so he/she can check off that you have completed that section (each section is worth 3 points for a total of 15 points)

Once you complete the case (this should take you a large chunk of time), you will then move on to Case 2: The Canine Caper. As you complete this case, take notes on all of your evidence collected and test results. When finished with the case, you will be completing a case report for this case. Please click the following link for a template of the case report: CASE REPORT TEMPLATE (you will need to make a copy of this google doc or download it in order to use it). You will need to complete one of these for EACH case you solve and each one is worth ten points. The parts of the case report are as follows:

PURPOSE:  Explain the purpose of the investigation.  This should include any relevant backstory for the crime collected by the detectives (give the details of the eye witness testimony)

EVIDENCE RECEIVED:  List the pieces of evidence that were found at the scene of the crime, preferably in a table. Do NOT provide results of lab tests in this section.

CLAIM: Based upon analysis of the evidence, who committed the crime and briefly explain why this is the hypothesis.

EXAMINATION AND RESULTS:  provide a detailed description of the results of the examination of the evidence found at the scene of the crime. Tables and/or graphs are recommended when applicable.

INTERPRETATION AND CONCLUSION:  Explain how each piece of evidence links the suspect to the crime scene and how it can be used to either prove the guilt of the suspect or exonerate other potential suspects.  Essentially, how did the data help lead to the claim made above?

Glass Quiz Next Meeting & First Case Study

Holy smokes, I didn't realize it had been so long since I updated this blog. Anyways, just a reminder that we will be having a quiz on glass analysis at our next class meeting so make sure you are looking over your notes. Quiz results should be posted on PowerSchool by the end of the upcoming weekend.

Upon completion of the quiz, you will begin working on your first case study of the year, which will include you submitting your first case report of the year as well. This activity will take us several class periods.

Once we are done with the case study, we will then move into the hair and fiber unit. This unit will include several labs (including analysis and identification of the hair samples you collected during the first week of the semester and an opportunity to light fires in class), a microscope quiz, and an end of unit assessment. The technical information in this unit is a little more intense than our previous units so please be aware and prepared for this.

Have a good night and happy studying!

Now Dropbox.com is down!, but go back to the learn site :)

Sorry, but, the dropbox is down. However, I have the fingerprint and serology materials in the http://learn.spartaschools.org site. Remember, when you login, use your first.lastname@SPARTA.LAN and then use your normal login password that you use at school. For example, when I login I use matt.landry@sparta.lan as my login.

Additionally, by the end of the evening, I will have all of the exam review materials posted including a folder that will have all of the PowerPoint from the semester in it. Happy studies!

Learn Site is Back - Sort Of

Hello everyone. I hope you have enjoyed your break and are ready to finish the last three weeks of the semester. Here are some updates and a vision of where we are going with the rest of the semester:

1. The learn site is back - kinda/sorta. A new learn site is present but it doesn't have all of the old unit info. I will plug all of the current and future units into the site over the next week, but I am not sure when the old stuff will be available. If its not brought back soon, I will put together a folder of all of the notes from the semester to help you in preparing for the final exam. In the meantime, I still have the files I setup at dropbox.com available, and the links are below:
Click here for the fingerprint unit materials

Click here for the materials for serology

2. Monday will involve reviewing the blood typing activities from the Friday prior to break. We will then complete the lab analysis and conclusions and discuss how blood typing is used for associating blood found at a crime scene to a suspect and how its used in the first round of paternity testing. We will also complete some practice with this.

3. Tuesday will be a demo/video day where we will review the presumptive tests for blood as well as moving on to the confirmatory tests for blood. We will also discuss how semen found at a crime scene is tested and helpful in solving the crime.

4. Wednesday we will begin looking at blood spatter and completing several activities that deal with point of origin and areas of convergence. This will then lead into the blood spatter lab that will take place Thursday and Friday and will involve you doing numerous activities that involve blood spatter as well as recording some of your tests, observations, and interpretations and posting them to YouTube.

5. Next week we will get into DNA testing and its procedures and the unit test will be towards the end of the week. We will then do a brief piece with toxicology and/or begin preparing for the practical (solving a crime scene constructed by Mr. Landry) and written portions of the final exam.

I look forward to seeing everyone on Monday.
